How Differential Pressure Flow Measurement Works with a DP Transmitter?

Types of Differential Pressure Transmitters and Their Applications

Types of differential pressure transmitters should be understood by structure, installation method, and application, not only by model name. A differential pressure transmitter measures the pressure difference between two points, but the way it is installed can vary greatly depending on flow, level, filter monitoring, or difficult process media.

Many buyers only ask for a “DP transmitter,” but this is not enough for correct selection. A DP transmitter for orifice flow measurement is not the same as a dual flange DP level transmitter for a closed tank.

Standard Differential Pressure Transmitter

A standard differential pressure transmitter has high-pressure and low-pressure process connections. It is usually installed with impulse lines and a 3-valve or 5-valve manifold.

This type is commonly used for clean gas, liquid, or steam applications where impulse lines can transmit pressure reliably. It is widely used for orifice plate flow, filter pressure drop, and general differential pressure monitoring.

It is suitable when the medium does not block, crystallize, corrode the impulse lines, or create heavy maintenance problems.

Differential Pressure Transmitter for Flow

For flow measurement, a DP transmitter is normally used with a primary element such as an orifice plate, venturi tube, or flow nozzle. The transmitter measures the pressure difference created by the flow restriction.

The key point is that the DP range should come from the flow calculation. Buyers should not choose the DP range by guesswork. The fluid type, pipe size, operating pressure, temperature, and designed differential pressure all matter.

In many systems, square-root extraction may be done in the transmitter, PLC, DCS, or flow computer. This must be confirmed before ordering or commissioning.

Differential Pressure Transmitter for Level

DP transmitters are also used for tank level measurement. In open tanks, one side may measure the bottom liquid column pressure while the other side references atmosphere. In closed tanks, DP measurement can compensate for the pressure above the liquid.

For corrosive, hot, viscous, or crystallizing liquids, remote diaphragm seals may be needed. These structures are often called single flange, dual flange, or remote seal DP level transmitters.

In DP level applications, liquid density is critical. The transmitter measures pressure, and that pressure depends on both liquid height and density.

Differential Pressure Transmitter for Filter Monitoring

For filter clogging monitoring, the transmitter measures pressure before and after the filter. As the filter becomes blocked, the DP increases.

This application does not always need very high accuracy. A suitable range, stable signal, correct static pressure rating, and reliable installation are more important.

Buyers should confirm clean-filter DP, alarm DP, maximum DP, line pressure, and medium condition.

Remote Seal Differential Pressure Transmitter

A remote seal DP transmitter is used when impulse lines are not suitable. This is common for corrosive, viscous, dirty, crystallizing, or high-temperature media.

The seals isolate the transmitter from the process. Pressure is transmitted through fill fluid and capillaries. This improves reliability in difficult media, but capillary length, fill fluid, temperature, and installation height must be checked carefully.

Conclusion

Differential pressure transmitters include standard impulse-line types, flow DP transmitters, level DP transmitters, filter monitoring transmitters, and remote seal versions. The right type depends on application, medium, DP range, static pressure, installation method, and maintenance requirements.

SIY Electric can help buyers choose suitable DP transmitters for flow, level, filter clogging, pressure drop, and remote seal applications.
