PDS863 Single Flange Level Transmitter Overview

The PDS863 single flange level transmitter is used for measuring liquid level in tanks and vessels by detecting the pressure generated by the liquid column. It is usually installed on the side flange or lower nozzle of a tank, vessel, reactor, separator, or storage container.

This structure uses a flange-mounted diaphragm seal in direct contact with the process liquid. The diaphragm transfers the process pressure to the transmitter sensor, and the transmitter converts the measured signal into a standard output for PLC, DCS, or fieldbus systems.

The PDS863 supports 4–20 mA DC with HART communication, PROFIBUS PA, and FOUNDATION Fieldbus FF outputs. Through a HART communicator, fieldbus system, or compatible communication device, users can perform remote setting, monitoring, diagnostics, simulation, and maintenance.

For open tanks or vessels where the top pressure is atmospheric or clearly defined, a single flange level transmitter is often a practical and economical level measurement solution.

Smart Single Flange Level Transmitter Output and Communication

The PDS863 single flange level transmitter can be selected with different output signals according to the automation system.

Output / CommunicationDescription
4–20 mA DC + HARTStandard analog output with HART digital communication
PROFIBUS PADigital fieldbus communication for process automation systems
FOUNDATION Fieldbus FFFieldbus communication for advanced field instrument networks

For most industrial tank level measurement applications, 4–20 mA with HART is widely used because it is compatible with many PLC and DCS systems while still supporting smart configuration, diagnostics, and loop checking.

Key Features of the PDS863 Flanged Level Transmitter

Single Flange Diaphragm Seal Design

The single flange structure allows the transmitter to be mounted directly on the tank or vessel flange. It is suitable for liquid level applications where ordinary threaded pressure connections may be too small, easy to block, or unsuitable for corrosive and viscous media.

High Accuracy Liquid Level Measurement

The PDS863 provides ±0.04% FS accuracy, supporting stable level measurement in storage tanks, process vessels, reactors, separators, and industrial level control loops.

30:1 Rangeability

The maximum rangeability of 30:1 provides flexibility for different tank heights and calibrated level spans.

Long-Term Stability for Tank Level Monitoring

The transmitter offers long-term stability of ±0.1% FS over 10 years, helping reduce recalibration frequency and maintenance workload during continuous operation.

Intelligent Diagnostics and Simulation

The PDS863 supports intelligent diagnostic and simulation functions. These functions help users check transmitter status, verify output signals, identify abnormal conditions, and simplify commissioning or troubleshooting.

Multiple Configuration Methods

Configuration can be performed through a HART communicator, PROFIBUS PA system, FOUNDATION Fieldbus system, or compatible communication device depending on the selected output.

Multiple Anti-Corrosion Material Options

Different diaphragm and wetted material options can be selected for different liquids. For corrosive, viscous, crystallizing, or dirty media, material and diaphragm seal structure should be confirmed carefully.

PDS863 Single Flange Level Measurement Principle

The PDS863 single flange level transmitter measures liquid level based on the hydrostatic pressure generated by the liquid column.

For an open tank, the pressure at the flange connection is mainly determined by:

  • liquid density
  • liquid height
  • gravity
  • installation position of the transmitter

As the liquid level rises, the pressure acting on the diaphragm increases. As the liquid level falls, the pressure decreases. The transmitter converts this pressure change into a proportional output signal.

In simple terms:

Liquid Level → Hydrostatic Pressure → Diaphragm Seal → Sensor Signal → 4–20 mA / HART / Fieldbus Output

For closed or pressurized tanks, the vapor space pressure may affect the level measurement. In that case, a dual flange differential pressure level transmitter is usually more suitable because it can compensate for the top pressure of the vessel.

Industrial Applications of PDS863 Single Flange Level Transmitter

Chemical and Petrochemical Tank Level Measurement

Used for liquid level monitoring in chemical storage tanks, reactors, separators, dosing tanks, process vessels, and intermediate tanks. For corrosive media, diaphragm material and flange material should be selected according to chemical compatibility.

Open Tank and Atmospheric Vessel Level Measurement

Suitable for open tanks, atmospheric storage vessels, water tanks, utility tanks, and process containers where the reference pressure condition is stable and does not require top pressure compensation.

Water Treatment and Utility Systems

Used for level measurement in water tanks, treatment tanks, filtration systems, dosing tanks, storage vessels, and industrial utility liquid systems.

Power Generation and Boiler Auxiliary Systems

Applied in condensate tanks, feedwater tanks, chemical dosing tanks, cooling water systems, and other liquid storage or process vessels in power plants.

Oil and Gas Liquid Level Monitoring

Used for separators, storage tanks, process vessels, fuel tanks, and auxiliary liquid systems where stable level measurement is required.

Viscous, Dirty, or Easy-to-Block Liquids

With a suitable diaphragm seal and flange size, the PDS863 can be used for certain viscous, dirty, or sediment-containing liquids where ordinary threaded pressure ports may be more likely to block.

Industrial Automation and Control Loops

Suitable for PLC/DCS systems requiring 4–20 mA HART, PROFIBUS PA, or FOUNDATION Fieldbus FF signals for tank level monitoring and process control.

How to Select a PDS863 Single Flange Level Transmitter

When selecting a PDS863 single flange level transmitter, the following details should be confirmed:

  1. Tank type
Confirm whether the tank is open, atmospheric, vacuum, or pressurized. For closed pressurized tanks, consider whether a dual flange DP level transmitter is required.
  2. Liquid medium
Confirm the liquid name, density, viscosity, corrosion, crystallization tendency, and whether solids or deposits are present.
  3. Level range
Confirm tank height, normal level, minimum level, maximum level, and required calibrated range.
  4. Process pressure
Confirm maximum tank pressure and whether the stated range of 0–10 MPa is suitable for the application.
  5. Process temperature
For high-temperature liquid, suitable diaphragm seal structure, filling fluid, or remote mounting solution may be required.
  6. Flange size and standard
Confirm flange size, pressure rating, sealing face, and standard, such as ASME, EN, DIN, JIS, or GB.
  7. Diaphragm and wetted material
Select suitable materials such as SS316L, Hastelloy, tantalum, Monel, PTFE-lined options, or other materials according to the process medium.
  8. Output signal
Select 4–20 mA + HART, PROFIBUS PA, or FOUNDATION Fieldbus FF according to the control system.
  9. Installation accessories
Confirm whether flushing ring, gasket, mating flange, flanged reducer, mounting bracket, or other accessories are required.
