Instrument Sunshade vs Instrument Protection Box

Why Do IP65 and IP67 Outdoor Instruments Still Need Sun and Rain Protection?

What Is an Instrument Sunshade and How to Choose One?

Pressure Transmitter Selection for Steam Pipelines

Pressure transmitter selection for steam pipelines must consider temperature protection, pressure range, installation accessories, and safe maintenance. Steam is not like normal water or air service. Even when the pressure range is clear, high temperature can damage the sensor, electronics, display, or sealing parts.

A standard pressure transmitter may be used for steam, but it usually needs proper installation accessories. Directly mounting the transmitter on a steam line without protection is risky.

Why Steam Needs Protection

Steam transfers heat quickly through the process connection. The transmitter body may not be able to tolerate the full steam temperature. Even if the transmitter works at first, long-term heat exposure can cause drift, shorter service life, or failure.

Common protection methods include:

  1. Siphon tube
Commonly used to create a condensate section between steam and transmitter.
  2. Condensing pipe or pot
Used in some steam applications to stabilize the pressure transfer.
  3. Cooling element
Helps reduce heat transfer to the transmitter body.
  4. Impulse line
Allows the transmitter to be mounted away from the hottest point.
  5. Diaphragm seal or capillary seal
Used when temperature or installation conditions are more difficult.

What Buyers Should Confirm

For steam pipeline pressure measurement, buyers should provide steam temperature, working pressure, maximum pressure, measuring range, process connection, installation position, and whether a siphon tube or other cooling accessory is already used.

The transmitter output is usually 4–20 mA, and HART may be selected if the control system needs smart communication. If the steam line is in a hazardous area, explosion-proof requirements should also be confirmed.

Conclusion

Pressure transmitter selection for steam pipelines should not focus only on pressure range. Temperature protection, siphon tube selection, installation position, pressure fluctuation, and maintenance access are also important.

SIY Electric can help select pressure transmitters and accessories for steam pipelines, boilers, heating systems, and high-temperature process lines.
